Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs)
What Are Renewable Energy Certificates?
Renewable Energy Certificates, often known as REC's, AEC's, or Carbon Credits are a third, often overlooked source of financial assistance for owners of renewable energy systems. These certificates represent the legal right to claim that your facility is solar powered. System owners can sell their certificates to increase the value of the power they produce.

Who will buy my SREC's?
Thanks to various state Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards Acts, electric companies are required to purchase a certain amount of REC's each year. This allows them to subsidize the renewable energy industry by paying other companies and individuals to install renewable energy systems on their properties rather than build large centralized power plants. This plan for distributed power production eases strains on the electric grid and helps us create a more reliable, efficient electric grid for the future.
Sounds Great!. . . But how does it all work?
The REC system is monitored and regulated by PJM Environmental Information Services. They provide renewable energy system owners an online system for managing their REC's. This online system notifies owners each time their system produces an REC. (One REC for every 1000 kWh) The online system also has features that allow the system owner to sell their RECs to electric companies or any other interested buyer.
This may all sound like a lot of trouble. That is why most of our customers use our broker, Knollwood Energy to handle their REC's. Knollwood Energy handles the REC's from production to sale and simply sends our customers a check for each of their REC's. Knollwood Energy is New Jersey and Pennsylvania's leading REC broker. They manage over 700 renewable energy systems in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. To learn more about Knollwood Energy, see their site here.
How much are my REC's worth?
The value of an REC varies from state to state depending on each state's Renewable Portfolio Standards and current market demand. There is no set price, but some current average prices are as follows: Pennsylvania - $300 , New Jersey - $700, Delaware - $220. These prices help to significantly reduce the payback period on renewable energy systems.
