How Solar Power Works

Eco-merica mainly offers grid tied solar electric systems. The solar panels collect energy from the sun aand convert it into household electricity. Rather than storing excess electricity in batteries, we send it back out to the grid, spinning the meter backwards. Systems like this make solar simple and affordable for the average homeowner or business. There are a four major components to the system.

1. Solar Panels
The solar panels convert sunlight into DC electricity. They send that electricity through wires down to the inverter. The panels are typically mounted either on the roof, or on a ground based racking system. The panels should be mounted facing as close to south as possible. They can be mounted facing either east or west as well, but with slightly less output over the course of a year.

2. Inverter
The inverter converts the DC solar power into grid compatible AC electricity. The inverter constantly monitors the grid to ensure the electricity it outputs matches the grid power. The inverters also detects when the electric grid goes down and automatically shuts itself down. This is important so electrical workers don't get electrocuted while working to fix the power lines.

3. Disconnect Switch
The disconnect switch is an important piece of safety equipment. It allows the power from the solar panels to be shut down manually. This is very important when making adjustments or repairs to a system. Without a disconnect switch, there is no way to stop the panels from producing electricity. Having one allows a worker to make changes to the system safely

4. Electric Meter
The electric meter is one of the most important components of the solar system. It allows accurate measurement of the power produced by the solar system to ensure the customer gets the right number of SRECs and gets the correct amount credited to their bill. Some utility companies use digital "smart" meters that compute it electronically and show the net usage.
